FBA is a Fantasy

WHEN YOUR FBA IS A FANTASY WORKSHOP

Creating Trauma-Informed, Brain-Based, Skill-Focused Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Support Plans that Improve Emotional, Behavioral and Academic Functioning

August 10, 2022:

9:00 AM - 4:30 PM CST

About the event

Traditional approaches to behavioral change using conventional FBA's and Behavior Support Plans have long fallen short, continuing to fail children to whom they're applied most. With assumptions about the "why" of behavior based in kids wanting to "get" or "avoid", they've left us with little to do but attempt to externally motivate through rewards and consequences.

Attempts at making behavioral change through the use of traditional FBA’s (Functional Behavior Assessments) and BSPs (Behavior Support Plans) have long fallen short, and we know that children who have experienced trauma and toxic stress often need far different approaches than those that we’ve traditionally applied.

Learn how to create and implement FBA’s and Behavior Plans that fulfill the criteria for being trauma-informed, and will meet the needs of these children by incorporating evidence-based tools and practices such as the Collaborative Problem Solving Model (Think:Kids, MGH, Harvard), the neuroscience research of Dr. Bruce Perry of the Child Trauma Academy, and others. This workshop-style training is intended for educators, parents, mental health clinicians, and community partners. Participants will experience a combination of didactic instruction, visuals, and examples, followed by hands-on creation of an FBA and BSP for a child that you live or work with. This is an opportunity to not only learn about this model, but to network with others who desire to promote a compassionate and neurodevelopmentally supportive approach.

What will I learn?

  • Strategies for looking deeper, beyond what a child is trying to get or avoid, to assess the underlying skills that need to be built
  • Comparisons of how brain-based, skill-focused FBAs & BSPs more effectively address the needs of children who have experienced trauma than traditional models
  • Processes to assess and plan proactive regulation as part of a plan to help a child become more accessible for intervention
  • Strategies for intervention components of the FBA and BSP to ensure that the brain can tolerate and grow from the experience
  • Application of how to take the information learned and create successful and effective Behavior Support Plans
